Zawistowski Challenges Borges to Debate Direction of the Ohio Republican Party

Kent – Today, Tom Zawistowski, Candidate for Chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, challenged his opponent Matt Borges, Executive Director of the Ohio Republican Party, to a debate in front of the State Central Committee members on Thursday night in Columbus.  In his email to Borges Zawistowski explained the necessity for a debate by saying “Due to the magnitude of the decision being made by the State Central Committee, concerning the direction of the Ohio Republican Party, I feel strongly that the Committee deserves the opportunity to compare our visions side by side beyond the limited 10 minutes we are allotted before the vote Friday. I therefore feel obligated to challenge you to debate me in front of the State Central Committee members on Thursday night. ”  After spelling out proposed rules for the debate, Zawistowski concluded by saying ” I further propose that the debate be open to coverage by the media since the direction of the Ohio Republican Party is of great importance to millions of Ohioans, but that the media not be allowed to ask questions.”  Here are the complete contents of the email to Borges:

Subject: Debate Challenge from Tom Zawistowski

Dear Matt,

It is my understanding that there is a reception for State Central Committee members on Thursday night in Columbus before the vote on Friday morning. Due to the magnitude of the decision being made by the State Central Committee, concerning the direction of the Ohio Republican Party, I feel strongly that the Committee deserves the opportunity to compare our visions side by side beyond the limited 10 minutes we are allotted before the vote Friday.

I therefore feel obligated to challenge you to debate me in front of the State Central Committee members on Thursday night at the current location of the reception.  Though we can negotiate the details, I would initially propose that the debate start at 7:30 PM and that it begin with an opening statement of 10 minutes by each candidate, with the order of speaking determined by a coin flip.  After the first 20 minutes of opening statements, we will then each answer direct questions from State Central Committee members for the next 40 minutes.  I further propose that the debate be open to the media since the direction of the Ohio Republican Party is of great importance to millions of Ohioans, but that the media not be allowed to ask questions.

Please notify me of your acceptance of my challenge as soon as possible. I look forward to the opportunity as I am sure you do as well.

Best Regards,

Tom Zawistowski
Candidate for Chairman of the Ohio Republican Party
